Mobile detailing is the right call for a maintenance wash or a light interior clean when you have a driveway, shade and a hose. A shop is the right call for everything that needs lighting, dust control, power, time or a controlled temperature: paint correction, ceramic coating, Icon Rocklear, deep interior extraction, odor removal, and anything that takes most of a day.
We should say up front: Logan's is a shop. We don't do mobile car detailing, and this guide will tell you when a mobile detailer is genuinely the better choice, because for some jobs they are. For the rest, our Van Nuys prices start at $180 for an exterior detail, $240 for an interior, and $389 for both.
What mobile detailing is genuinely good at
Mobile detailers exist for a reason, and it's a good one: you don't have to go anywhere. In Los Angeles, where dropping a car off can cost you two hours of freeway, that's worth real money.
Mobile makes sense when:
- It's a maintenance job. A proper hand wash, a wheel clean, a vacuum and wipe-down, a quick wax. Nothing that needs the paint inspected under lights.
- You have the site for it. A driveway or private parking with shade, water and a power outlet. Apartment garages and street parking make most of this impossible, and many HOAs and building managers don't allow washing on site.
- You have a fleet or several cars. Doing four cars in one visit beats four drop-offs.
- You physically can't get to a shop. Mobility, schedule, no second car. Convenience isn't a luxury for everyone.
A good mobile detailer with a water tank, a generator and the right products does that work well. If that's what you need, book one.
What mobile can't do well, and why
The problem is that "detailing" covers everything from a Sunday wash to a two-day coating install, and the driveway is the wrong place for the second half of that list. Not because mobile technicians are worse, but because the work has requirements a driveway doesn't meet.
Light. Swirl marks, holograms and etching are only visible under directional inspection lights. Outdoors in LA you get either full sun, which hides fine defects in glare, or shade, which hides everything. A paint correction you can't see is a paint correction you can't judge. This is the single biggest reason correction and coatings belong in a shop.
Dust, pollen and wind. A ceramic coating or Icon Rocklear cures on the surface for hours. Anything that lands on it in that window is in the coating. In the Valley in September, that's dust, jacaranda debris and fire-season ash. Indoors, it's nothing.
Heat. Coatings and polishes are chemistry with a temperature range. A panel at 130°F on a driveway in July flashes coating before it can level and makes polish gum up. A shop bay is the temperature the products were designed for.
Power and water. Steam extraction, hot-water extraction and an ozone treatment for odors need serious equipment. Some mobile rigs carry it; many carry a wet-vac and a generator. Los Angeles also restricts runoff from washing on streets and driveways, and a mobile detailer working legally has to capture it, which limits what they can do.
Time. Our interior and exterior detail is 6–9 hours. A 2-step paint correction is 6–8. A coating is a working day plus cure. Icon is two days. Nobody wants a technician in their driveway for nine hours, and the work gets rushed to fit the visit.
Being able to walk away. In a shop, the car sits overnight if it needs to. On your driveway, the job ends when the van leaves.

The interior includes steam sanitization, enzyme pre-treatment and extraction of all flooring and seats, deep leather cleaning and stain removal. Mobile pricing in LA is often close to this for the same named service, and sometimes higher once travel is built in. That's fine; you're paying for the visit. Just check that the "detail" on the quote includes the things above, because a lot of mobile "full details" are a wash and a vacuum with a bigger name.
The honest case for driving to Van Nuys

Is mobile detailing cheaper than a shop?
Not usually, for the same work. Mobile detailers carry their equipment, water and travel time into the price. Where mobile is cheaper, check what's actually included; it's often a smaller job with the same name.
Can a ceramic coating be applied mobile?
It can be, and some detailers do it. It shouldn't be, in our view: the coating cures on the surface for hours and picks up whatever lands on it, and you can't inspect the correction underneath without proper lights. A coating is a multi-year product. Spend the drop-off.
Do you offer mobile detailing?
No. We're a shop in Van Nuys and we've built it around work that needs a bay: lighting, temperature, power, and the ability to keep a car overnight. The exception is aircraft, where our team works at the hangar because the aircraft can't come to us.
How long do I leave the car?
Exterior or interior detail, most of the day. Both together, the full day. Paint correction, the day. Coatings, the day plus cure. Icon Rocklear, about two days. You get exact drop-off and pick-up times when you book.
Can I just wait at the shop?
For a consultation, yes, it's about thirty minutes. For a detail, plan on leaving the car; the shortest package is three hours.
Is washing my car in the driveway allowed in Los Angeles?
Rules on water use and runoff change with drought conditions and by city, and many apartment buildings and HOAs ban it outright. Check what applies to you before booking a mobile wash at home.
